Decode the 80-byte block header: version, prev hash, merkle root, timestamp, bits, nonce.
Hash the header twice with SHA-256, exactly as the Bitcoin consensus rules require.
Compare the resulting hash against the target derived from the difficulty bits.
Validate linkage to the previous header — a broken link means a broken chain.
